Thomas Mapfumo performs at Ohio University’s Templeton-Blackburn Aud, a great venue for a freedom fighter
Earlier this year, Thomas Tafirenyika Mukanya Mapfumo of Zimbabwe was awarded an honorary doctorate of music from the university’s College of Fine Arts, recognizing him as an African musician and a freedom fighter. Now in October, he performed his famous Chimurenga music, filled with lyrics talking against racism and oppression. He performed in an auditorium named in honor of two black Ohio University graduates, one who was only the fourth African-American to graduate from an American college, the other the first black woman to graduate from Ohio University, a truly apt setting for a freedom fighter.
