South African Fashion Week 2001

Witty, wonderful, whacky, colorful, and weird, with “fantastical” hair creations. Cultural diversity offers exciting opportunities. Stylish people wear what’s made in South Africa. A growing industry. Confidence. Creativity. Innovation. The future.

South African Fashion Week 2001 ran from August 28 and concluded on September 2 at the Sandton Convention Centre. This year’s show was sponsored by Mercedes-Benz, Nationwide Airlines, Nordic Ice, Moët & Chandon, the Sandton Convention Centre, Siemens Mobile, Sappi, Park Hyatt Johannesburg, Fairlady and Elle.

Craig Jacobs, who attended the show for The Sunday Times, described it this way:

“Collections which ranged from the witty and wonderful to the whacky and weird. The exhibition area again attracted a more convivial crowd, with people cheering as they watched hairstylists conjure up fantastical creations.”

The Fashion Week Promoters gave us an advance look at what we could expect. The themes appeared to be based on these interesting ideas:

* “The diversity of cultures in South Africa offers exciting and unique opportunities for all artists.”
* “All the extremely stylish people I know are wearing clothes from the South African fashion industry.”
* “The rare opportunity to play a part in growing an industry instead of merely reporting on it or criticizing it.”
